Rethink Drug Policy
Health Poverty Action is calling for a new approach to drug policy, which puts people's health and rights first.23 Mar 2016
The animation explores how global drug policies affect ordinary people around the world, sharing the stories of Lae, Fatima, Maria and Oumar.
Governments around the world follow an approach to drug policy that bans the production, trade and use of illicit drugs.
This approach, which has come to be known as the ‘war on drugs’, hasn’t worked. Instead it has had enormous human and financial costs; fuelling poverty, driving conflict and corruption, blocking access to healthcare, and failing some of the world’s poorest and most marginalised communities. These policies cost over $100 billion a year to enforce, yet there has been no significant reduction in the global use of illicit drugs since the UN’s drug conventions came into force half a century ago.
